4. Product Technical Information:

Introduction:       
                                         

NM400 is a versatile and cost-effective wear-resistant steel with a hardness range of 370-430 HBW. It offers a good balance of hardness, toughness, and strength, making it suitable for medium-wear applications in mining, construction, material handling, and agriculture. While it is less hard than higher-grade steels like NM500, it is easier to machine and weld, providing a practical solution for many industrial needs.

Fabrication and Heat Treatment:
Tempering:
Tempering is a crucial heat treatment process for NM400, performed after quenching to achieve a balance between hardness and toughness. This process helps reduce brittleness, relieve internal stresses, and improve the material's overall mechanical properties.Typically tempered at temperatures between 150°C to 250°C (302°F to 482°F).The steel is held at the tempering temperature for 1 to 2 hours per 25 mm of thickness.This ensures uniform heat distribution and stress relief. After tempering, NM400 is cooled slowly in air to room temperature to avoid introducing new stresses.
 
Annealing:
Annealing NM400 involves heating the steel to 800-850°C, holding it at this temperature, and then slowly cooling it in the furnace. This process softens the material, relieves internal stresses, and improves machinability. However, annealing is not a standard treatment for NM400 and is typically used only in specific scenarios, such as repair or reworking. After annealing, NM400 must undergo re-hardening (quenching and tempering) to restore its wear-resistant properties.
 
Hot Working:
Hot working of NM400 involves shaping the steel at high temperatures (900°C to 1200°C) through processes like hot rolling, forging, extrusion, or drawing. This method improves the material's mechanical properties, refines its grain structure, and makes it easier to deform. While hot working has some challenges, such as surface oxidation and energy consumption, it is a crucial process for producing high-performance components in demanding industries.
 
Welding: Conventional methods are used for welding.
Forging:
Forging of NM400 involves shaping the steel at high temperatures (900°C to 1200°C) using localized compressive forces. This method improves the material's mechanical properties, refines its grain structure, and makes it easier to deform. While forging has some challenges, such as surface oxidation and energy consumption, it is a crucial process for producing high-performance components in demanding industries.
 
Forming: It can be readily formed by conventional methods in the annealed condition.
Machinability:

NM400 is classified as difficult to machine but slightly easier than higher grades like NM500. However, with the right tools (carbide/ceramic), optimized cutting parameters, and proper cooling, it can be machined effectively. Key strategies include: Using low speeds and moderate feeds. Ensuring rigid setups to minimize vibration. Applying high-pressure coolant to manage heat and chip evacuation. Considering annealing for complex machining tasks. For critical applications, grinding or laser cutting may be more efficient alternatives to traditional machining. Tips to Improve Machinability: Soften NM400 by annealing (heat to 800-850°C, slow cool) before machining, then re-harden (quench and temper). Locally preheat the workpiece (e.g., for welding) to reduce hardness in specific areas. Ensure tools are sharp and free of wear to avoid excessive cutting forces.

Heat Treatment:
NM400 is typically supplied in a quenched and tempered condition to achieve its high hardness and toughness. Quenching: Heated to 900-950°C, then rapidly cooled (oil or water).Tempering: Reheated to 150-250°C to reduce brittleness.
 
Applications:
NM400 is used in a wide range of industries and applications, including: Mining Equipment: Buckets, liners, crushers, and conveyor components. Construction Machinery: Bulldozer blades, excavator parts, and dump truck liners. Material Handling: Chutes, hoppers, and wear plates. Agricultural Machinery: Plowshares, harvester parts, and tillage tools.

5. Weldability: Can be welded using appropriate techniques and materials. Preheating and post-weld heat treatment may be required to avoid cracking.
